Year 7 selective entry · Year 6 reading foundation
Compare two texts. Explain what the evidence allows.
Read three original pairs: a notice and diary, a newsletter and email, and a museum caption and poem. Two complete models lead into 20 untimed questions, from guided comparison to independent practice.
This is one Stage 3 English reading skill. It is not an official Reading test, a placement prediction or a promise that paid coaching helps entry.
The lesson route and practice need a saved Year 6 goal and current learning access. Four print editions are available through the learning platform.
Follow a claim back to the words
How the learning builds
- Prepare. Read the labelled sentences and identify each text’s purpose.
- I do. Follow two complete, answered comparisons with evidence and limits.
- We do. Try five questions with three thinking steps and a hint.
- You do. Try five with lighter support, then ten independently. Check each answer against the precise words.
- Return. Revisit the idea after 3, 7 and 14 days.
The saved lesson tree
The goal uses the existing Compares and synthesises texts on the same topic lesson and its 15 mapped prerequisites. The two direct prerequisites are below; the earlier lessons remain in the saved plan. The mapped lesson is an older single-presentation lesson. This focused practice has learner and full online explanations and separate print editions.
- Direct prerequisite 1Gathers research and judges the reliability of sources
- Direct prerequisite 2Identifies the main idea and supporting details
- Target lessonCompares and synthesises texts on the same topic
About the placement test
NSW currently describes a computer-based test with Reading, mathematical reasoning, thinking skills and writing. Reading has 17 questions, including three with multiple parts, over 45 minutes and uses varied genres. This foundation has 20 untimed questions about one reading skill; it does not reproduce that format or cover the whole section.
The department supplies free practice and says paid coaching is not necessary or endorsed, with no credible evidence that it improves entry. This route supports ordinary reading learning without making an admissions claim.
Scope checked 4 October 2026 against the NSW Department of Education’s current test guide and the NSW Stage 3 English reading comprehension content. TutorForAll wrote the passages and questions independently.
