Year 7 entry · Year 6 curriculum foundation

Work out the area. Show why it fits.

Use square grids to reason about rectangles, triangles and missing pieces. Two linked lessons lead into 20 original, untimed questions with hints and worked feedback.

This route covers one Year 6 curriculum topic. It is not a selective placement test, and an area question is not guaranteed to appear in the test.

The full lesson route and questions require a saved Year 6 goal and current learning access.

Covering and boundary are different

Every cell is 1 cm by 1 cm. Both rectangles cover 24 cells, but their outside edges have different lengths.

A: 6 cm by 4 cm

Area: 24 cm² · Perimeter: 20 cm

B: 8 cm by 3 cm

Area: 24 cm² · Perimeter: 22 cm

Area counts squares. Perimeter traces the edge. Equal areas do not force equal perimeters.

How the practice builds

  1. 1. Count the covering. Read the grid and name the square-centimetre unit.
  2. 2. Use equal rows. Connect counting squares to length times width.
  3. 3. Reason with shapes. Halve a rectangle for a right triangle or subtract a missing piece.
  4. 4. Check the explanation. Five answer choices reveal common area and perimeter mix-ups. Each worked answer links to its lesson.

The saved plan holds 17 authored lessons in its prerequisite closure. The grid and formula lessons below feed this practice directly; earlier foundations remain available for review.

About the placement test

The current NSW guide describes a computer-based Year 7 entry test with reading, mathematical reasoning, thinking skills and writing. Mathematical reasoning has 35 five-choice questions in 40 minutes, without a calculator.

The department says questions draw on curriculum through Year 6 and does not recommend or endorse coaching. This area route supports ordinary curriculum learning; it does not promise a placement advantage or predict a result.

Checked 4 October 2026 against the NSW Department of Education’s test structure and free practice and placement guidance. TutorForAll wrote the practice independently.
