Focused preparation · Year 9 reading
Does the evidence support the claim?
Read three original arguments about a bike-rack roof, later library hours and water refill stations. Follow two worked examples, then answer twenty questions about whether claims match their evidence.
This is one argument-and-evidence foundation. It is not an official NAPLAN paper, complete Reading programme, tailored test or score estimate.
The lessons and practice open from a saved Year 9 argument goal with current learning access.
A claim needs a matching measure
- Bike racks · B4–B534 of 45 survey respondents report a rain concern. That cannot prove every student would cycle daily.
- Library · L3–L427 students arrived before 3:30 pm. The sign-in sheet does not count later-hour users.
- Refill station · R6–R7Three leaks at one tap cannot establish the reliability of every station.
How you learn it
- Prepare. Name the claim, sample and measure.
- I do. Follow two complete evidence checks.
- We do. Try five guided questions with three prompts.
- You do. Try five with less support, then ten independently.
- Revisit. Return after 3, 7 and 14 days to explain limits and competing views.
Learner and full teaching explanations share the same online questions. Four A4 student and tutor print editions use the same texts and answers.

What this covers
Year 9 reading descriptions include evaluating evidence, bias and competing perspectives. This foundation teaches one linked NSW Stage 5 argument skill through original persuasive texts.
The official Year 9 Reading assessment has 48 items across three tailored testlets and a 65-minute limit. This untimed route is one part of the skill base, not a reproduction of those testlets.
