Focused preparation · Year 7 numeracy

Make sense of numbers below zero.

Read and order integers on a number line. Then add or subtract signed numbers, first with fully worked steps and then through 20 original questions.

This is one number foundation within Year 7 numeracy. It is not a complete NAPLAN programme, tailored test or official score estimate.

The linked lessons and full practice set require a saved Year 7 goal and current learning access.

Read the position before calculating

-8-6-4-202468AB
A is at −6 and B is at −2. B is farther right, so −2 is larger. A move can cross zero: −4 + 7 = 3.

How to work through it

  1. 1. Find the position. Locate negative values and zero on a common scale.
  2. 2. Follow the worked steps. Compare positions and trace each move across zero.
  3. 3. Try with support. Use a hint before checking the answer.
  4. 4. Apply it alone. Answer ten independent questions, then read the worked feedback.

The connected learning route

The saved route uses the existing NSW learning tree. Number-line placement and two-digit subtraction lead directly to integer work; 9 earlier skills are available for review.

The scope of this foundation

The national Year 7 proficiency descriptions include comparing and representing integers. The assessment spans number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability; this route covers only integer order and signed addition or subtraction. It reuses an existing single-presentation lesson, without a new paired print edition.
