Focused preparation · Year 7 numeracy

Make equal groups. Find the fraction.

Start with six checks and three worked examples. Then practise 40 original questions as support fades toward independent work.

This is one untimed curriculum foundation. It is not an official item set, a complete NAPLAN test or a score prediction.

The lesson, full practice and four A4 student/tutor editions require a saved Year 7 goal and current learning access. Tutor answers require a linked tutor or admin role.

Start with one equal group

The whole is 18 counters. Share them equally into six groups.

One sixth is 18 ÷ 6 = 3 counters. Two sixths are two of those groups: 3 + 3 = 6. The whole remains 18.

How the practice builds

  1. 1. Find your starting point. Six questions show whether the whole and equal groups are clear.
  2. 2. Follow the models. See how to find a part, rebuild a whole and find what remains.
  3. 3. Work together, then alone. Six guided and eight supported questions lead to twenty independent problems.
  4. 4. Come back later. Six retrieval questions revisit the idea after three, seven and fourteen days.

What this foundation covers

The National Assessment Program’s Year 7 numeracy descriptions include finding fractions of quantities. Its guidance says most questions draw on prior years of schooling.

This route uses the NSW Stage 3 unit-fractions lesson as a prior-learning foundation. It covers equal groups, a selected fraction, the remaining quantity and recovering the whole.
