Focused preparation · Year 5 reading

Make an inference. Show what proves it.

Read a story, a one-day shade survey and a persuasive letter. Follow two fully worked examples, then practise with twenty original questions and exact evidence.

This is one foundation for evidence-based reading. It is not an official NAPLAN paper, complete Reading programme, tailored test or score estimate.

The lessons and practice open from a saved Year 5 evidence-based inference goal with current learning access.

What the clues can tell you

  1. 1 · Exact clueNia keeps her bridge model boxed while she touches its uneven paint.
  2. 2 · Careful inferenceShe may be unsure about showing that part of her work.
  3. 3 · LimitThe story never states her exact feeling, so “may” matters.
These are clues from an original fictional story in the foundation. The full text lets you check them in context.

How you learn it

  1. Prepare. Read the text, locate a clue and test its limit.
  2. I do. Follow two full claim–evidence–reasoning models.
  3. We do. Try five guided questions with three prompts.
  4. You do. Try five with less support, then ten independently.
  5. Revisit. Return after 3, 7 and 14 days and explain your reasoning.

The foundation has learner and full teaching explanations online. Four A4 student and tutor print editions use the same texts and answers. The linked curriculum lesson itself remains in its existing single-presentation format.

What this covers

Year 5 reading descriptions include connecting information across a text and drawing supported inferences. This foundation teaches that one skill through imaginative, informative and persuasive passages; it does not reproduce the wider assessment.
