Focused preparation · Year 5 numeracy

Understand fractions, then apply them.

Follow unit and equivalent fraction lessons through worked examples, guided practice and independent questions. Then try 20 original, untimed application questions.

This is one focused part of Year 5 numeracy. It does not cover the full NAPLAN test, estimate an official score or promise a particular result.

Opening lessons and practice requires a saved learner goal and current learning access.

The same whole, cut again

1/22/4
The whole stays the same size. Cutting each half again changes its name from 1/2 to 2/4, but not its amount.

How the route works

  1. 1. Build the idea. See equal parts and keep the whole fixed in illustrated lessons.
  2. 2. Work with support. Follow the worked steps and try guided questions before working alone.
  3. 3. Apply it. Answer original, untimed multiple-choice questions and read a worked explanation after checking.
  4. 4. Revisit the gap. Each question points back to the linked concept lesson. Your normal lesson progress stays in your learning account.

The route in the learning tree

The target is equivalent fractions. The tree also shows 11 existing prerequisite skills in dependency order. You can review earlier ideas as needed; a foundation is a recommendation, not a lock on its lesson.

What this covers

The official Year 5 proficiency descriptions include work with unit fractions and identifying equivalent fractions.

NAPLAN numeracy also draws on number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability, with multiple-choice, text-entry and interactive questions. Those other areas and formats are not part of this route yet.
